Piper excelsum, commonly known as Kawakawa or NZ Pepper Tree, is an evergreen New Zealand native shrub grown for its glossy heart-shaped leaves and cultural significance. This shade-tolerant plant forms a bushy shrub with aromatic green foliage often marked by insect feeding holes. Small upright flower spikes appear seasonally and may develop into orange fruit on female plants. Kawakawa grows best in partial shade with moist, well-drained soil and sheltered conditions. Suitable for many New Zealand gardens, it is commonly used in native planting, woodland gardens and rongoā Māori gardens.
Key difference: Aromatic heart-shaped native foliage with cultural significance.
