Port wine magnolia or banana shrub (Magnolia figo, syn. Michelia figo) is an evergreen perennial shrub with a dense, rounded habit and glossy dark green leaves. Its small, cup-shaped cream to pale yellow flowers have fine dark red margins and a distinctive banana-like fragrance. Flowering occurs mainly during late spring and early summer.

This shrub suits sheltered hedges, borders, courtyards and specimen planting near paths or outdoor living areas. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water during dry periods and protect young plants from hard frost. It generally reaches 2.5–4 m tall and responds well to light shaping after flowering.

Native origin: Southeastern China and historically Jeju Island, South Korea — not native to New Zealand
Plant type: Evergreen perennial shrub or small tree
Companion Plants: Camellias, gardenias, daphne, hydrangeas and rhododendrons.

Key difference: Banana-scented flowers have fine dark red petal margins. Fragrant evergreen shrub ideal for sheltered hedges, borders and specimen planting.
