Volcano camellia (Camellia japonica ‘Volcano’) is an evergreen perennial shrub developed in New Zealand. It has vigorous, open upright growth, glossy dark-green foliage and large, ruffled scarlet-red flowers with an anemone form. Flowering occurs mainly from winter into spring.
‘Volcano’ grows approximately 2 m tall and 1.5 m wide. It suits hedging, screening, mixed borders, cottage gardens, containers and specimen planting. Grow in full sun or partial shade in humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods. Mulch around the roots to conserve moisture and protect the plant from strong winds and severe frost. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain its shape.
