Renate Steiniger mophead hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Renate Steiniger’) is a deciduous perennial shrub with glossy green leaves and rounded flower heads from midsummer into autumn. Blooms are clear blue in acidic soil, changing towards mauve or pink as soil pH rises.
Growing approximately 1.2–1.5 m tall, it suits shaded borders, cottage gardens, containers and informal hedging. Plant in partial shade or morning sun, in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water during dry periods, mulch annually and shelter from harsh afternoon sun. Prune lightly after flowering, retaining healthy older stems that carry future flower buds.
