Rainbow Queen New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax ‘Rainbow Queen’)
Also known as ‘Māori Queen’, this colourful evergreen flax forms a tidy clump of upright bronze-green leaves that arch at their tips. Rose-red margins and stripes create warm, year-round colour. Mature plants may produce tall stems of tubular yellowish flowers in summer.
Growing approximately 1.2 m tall and wide, it suits feature planting, mixed borders, banks, coastal gardens and large containers. Plant in full sun for the richest colouring or partial shade, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and during extended dry periods. Once established, it tolerates wind, frost and coastal exposure. Remove damaged outer leaves and spent flower stems at the base.
Native origin: Cultivar of the New Zealand-native Phormium tenax
